Volvo Trucks North America is initiating a recall of over 5,200 of its New VN model trucks due to a software issue that can cause the hazard warning switch backlighting to fail during operation. The affected vehicles were produced between January 10, 2022, and March 26, 2025, and are equipped with a specific version of the Vehicle Master Control Unit (VMCU) software. While the hazard switch continues to function as intended, the intermittent lighting issue means the vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 101, Section S5.3.1(a). The problem stems from a transient voltage spike that can momentarily disrupt the backlighting circuit’s overcurrent protection.
Volvo discovered the issue after engineers noted a rise in diagnostic trouble codes in February 2025. An internal investigation followed, ultimately leading the Product Safety Committee to determine on March 31, 2025, that the issue constitutes a regulatory non-compliance requiring a recall. To date, the company has not received any reports of accidents, injuries, warranty claims, or field reports linked to the defect.

The remedy involves updating the VMCU software to maintain consistent backlighting functionality in the affected switches. Vehicles held in Volvo’s control have been paused from further distribution until corrected. The recall will proceed under Volvo’s reimbursement plan already on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Dealers will begin receiving notifications starting April 11, 2025, with vehicle owners set to be notified by June 1, 2025.
