The defect was identified as a deviation in the supplier’s manufacturing process, specifically with LG Energy Solution Battery (Nanjing) Co., which could lead to an internal short circuit within certain battery cells. If the battery is fully charged and the vehicle is parked, this defect may result in overheating, posing a risk of a thermal event or fire. Volvo Cars has not reported any injuries, fatalities, or incidents of the defect occurring while the vehicle is in motion. However, a thermal event was first reported on February 6, 2024, prompting an investigation that led to the decision to issue a recall.

To remedy the issue, Volvo plans to inspect affected vehicles using dealer-based analytical methods to detect cell deviations. If no issues are detected, the vehicles will receive a software upgrade to monitor battery health. However, if a potential defect is identified, the high-voltage battery module(s) will be replaced free of charge. The corrective action is set to begin on March 20, 2025, with customer notification letters expected to be sent out by May 15, 2025.
Owners who have already paid for repairs related to this issue may be eligible for reimbursement. For further information, customers can contact the Volvo Customer Care Center at 1-800-458-1552 or visit the company’s support website.
