New York Wholesale Group has issued a recall for four of its Zaarah Herbals dietary supplements due to the potential presence of elevated levels of lead and arsenic. The affected products include Zaarah Herbals Rasayan Churan, Zaarah Herbals Gurmar Powder, Zaarah Herbals Vasaka Powder, and Zaarah Herbals Bhringraj Powder. These supplements were distributed to retailers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and California between December 20, 2024, and January 7, 2025.

Exposure to lead can cause serious health effects, particularly in children and pregnant women. Short-term exposure to low levels of lead may not show immediate symptoms, but increased blood lead levels can lead to long-term health issues. Chronic exposure to lead is linked to kidney dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, and neurological effects. Similarly, consumption of inorganic arsenic has been associated with cancer, skin lesions, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Exposure during fetal development and early childhood may also contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders and an increased lifetime cancer risk.

The recalled products are sold in clear 100g (3.5oz) jars with gold lids, with the product name prominently displayed on the front. The batch codes, which can be found on the back panel of the jars, include BJ 04 for Bhringraj Powder, GD 04 for Gurmar Powder, VK 04 for Vasaka Powder, and RY 04 for Rasayan Churan. All affected products were manufactured in July 2022. The recall follows an analysis conducted by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, Food & Standards Division, which detected the contamination.
Consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them and can return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. No illnesses related to these products have been reported at this time.
