Exposure to lead can cause serious health effects, particularly in children and pregnant women. Short-term exposure to low levels of lead may not show immediate symptoms, but increased blood lead levels can lead to long-term health issues. Chronic exposure to lead is linked to kidney dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, and neurological effects. Similarly, consumption of inorganic arsenic has been associated with cancer, skin lesions, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Exposure during fetal development and early childhood may also contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders and an increased lifetime cancer risk.
