The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning advising restaurants, food retailers, and consumers in California to avoid consuming certain frozen half-shell oysters from the Republic of Korea due to a potential norovirus contamination. The affected oysters were harvested from Designated Area II on January 30 and February 4, 2024, and were imported by Sea Win, Inc. of Los Angeles. The company issued a recall of the product on March 7, 2025. While distribution was confirmed in California, officials caution that the product may have reached other states.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause gastroenteritis, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain. The illness typically develops within 12 to 48 hours of exposure and can be particularly dangerous for young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Dehydration is a significant concern for those affected, with symptoms including decreased urination, dry mouth, and dizziness. The FDA urges anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming these oysters to seek medical attention and report their illness to local health authorities.

The California Department of Health alerted the FDA to the norovirus outbreak, prompting the recall by Sea Win. The FDA is actively investigating the situation and monitoring the distribution of the contaminated oysters. The agency recommends that restaurants and retailers immediately dispose of any affected products and thoroughly sanitize surfaces and utensils that may have come into contact with the oysters. Consumers are advised to avoid eating these oysters and to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms.

Norovirus contamination cannot be detected through appearance, smell, or taste. The FDA is working with state authorities to assess the extent of the distribution and will provide updates as new information becomes available. Restaurants and retailers are advised to exercise caution in handling shellfish to prevent cross-contamination, including frequent handwashing and proper sanitation practices. Consumers concerned about potential exposure should check with retailers regarding the source of their seafood.
