Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC has issued a recall for 2,943 hybrid electric vehicles due to a software issue that could lead to an unexpected loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects several 2023 to 2026 Mercedes-AMG models, including the GT 63 S E Performance, SL 63 S E Performance, GLC 63 S E Performance, and S 63 E Performance. The defect involves the control unit of the high-voltage starter alternator, which may experience sporadic processor overload.

The issue could cause the monitoring function in the starter alternator system to falsely detect a component fault, potentially deactivating the starter alternator. Mercedes-Benz has indicated that there is no prior warning before the issue occurs, but once it does, drivers may see several warning messages on the instrument cluster. The defect was identified through field complaints and subsequent testing between October 2024 and February 2025.
The automaker plans to notify dealers of the recall on March 7, 2025, with vehicle owners being informed before April 29, 2025. Mercedes-Benz will address the problem by updating the software in the affected vehicles’ high-voltage starter alternator control units. All involved vehicles remain under the new vehicle warranty, and no reimbursement for prior repairs is necessary. There have been five warranty claims in the U.S. related to this issue, but no reported crashes, injuries, or fatalities.
