Volkswagen Group of America has issued a safety recall for 60,490 vehicles, including certain Volkswagen ID.4 models and Audi Q4 e-tron SUVs and Sportbacks, due to a potential software issue affecting the transmission gear position display. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under recall number 25V-120, involves specific software versions in the brake control unit that may not correctly show the “N” (Neutral) gear position on the instrument cluster under certain conditions. This noncompliance violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 102, which governs transmission shift position sequence, starter interlock, and transmission braking effect.

The recall affects 25,210 units of the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 USA, 25,761 units of the 2021-2022 Volkswagen ID.4, 7,492 units of the 2022-2023 Audi Q4 e-tron SUV, and 2,027 units of the 2022-2023 Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback. Vehicles produced with an updated software version from October 2023 onwards are not impacted. The issue could increase the risk of a crash or vehicle rollaway if the electronic parking brake is not engaged and the correct gear position is not displayed. An unlit red parking brake indicator on the instrument cluster can serve as a warning to vehicle operators.
Volkswagen and Audi will install updated brake control unit software at no cost to vehicle owners. Since the affected vehicles remain under warranty, a reimbursement program will not be offered. Dealers were notified of the recall on February 28, 2025, and owner notifications are expected by April 25, 2025. Owners are advised to ensure the parking brake indicator is illuminated before leaving their vehicle to avoid unintended movement.

The software issue was initially identified in August 2024 through field reports from outside the U.S. The investigation and testing took place between August 2024 and February 2025, culminating in the decision to issue a recall after internal testing confirmed the replicability of the display issue. The updated software version, identified as 0526, has already been implemented in vehicles produced since October 2023. Affected vehicle owners can contact Volkswagen Group of America at 1-800-893-5298 for more information.
