Hayes began her career with the District of Maryland in 2013 as an Assistant United States Attorney and has since held multiple leadership roles, including Principal Deputy Chief for the Southern Division, Deputy Chief for the Southern Division, and Deputy Appellate Chief. As Chief of the Southern Division, she managed cases involving MS-13 gang activity and other serious crimes. Her appointment as interim U.S. Attorney follows her extensive contributions to the office and her work with federal, state, and local partners.
Raised in Montgomery County, Maryland, Hayes earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland at College Park and went on to complete her law degree at the University of North Carolina School of Law. She also clerked for Judge Janis L. Sammartino in the Southern District of California. Hayes expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in her by the President and the Attorney General and emphasized her commitment to combating criminal activity and representing the interests of the United States.
