On February 12, CBP officers confiscated 32 parcels containing 75 pounds and seven ounces of poppy pods. A week later, on February 19, they seized another 49 parcels weighing a total of 141 pounds and nine ounces. The final seizure, on February 21, included 35 parcels totaling 40 pounds and nine ounces. The shipments were intended for multiple addresses across the United States.

Opium poppies are classified as a Schedule II controlled substance under federal law, as they naturally contain morphine and codeine. Illegally imported poppy pods are often ground into a substance used to brew “poppy tea,” which has narcotic and psychoactive effects. The Drug Enforcement Administration warns that opium is highly addictive and can lead to severe physical and psychological dependence, overdose, and even death.
