Tesla, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall affecting 376,241 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from the 2023 model year due to a software-related issue that could lead to a loss of electronic power-assisted steering (EPAS). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) assigned the recall the identification number 25V-092. The recall applies to vehicles equipped with a software release prior to version 2023.38.4, which may experience an overvoltage breakdown causing stress to motor drive components on the steering system’s printed circuit board. Although steering functionality remains intact while the vehicle is in motion, a complete loss of EPAS may occur when the vehicle is stationary, potentially increasing the risk of an accident in certain situations.

The issue was first identified in December 2023 when a regulatory authority outside the United States launched an investigation into complaints regarding EPAS failures. Between December 2023 and October 2024, Tesla engaged in technical discussions with the authority and participated in reviews to assess the risks associated with the defect. By mid-January 2025, Tesla decided to recall all affected vehicles globally to maintain consistency for its customers. The company has reported 3,012 warranty claims and 570 field reports related to the issue but has stated that there have been no crashes, injuries, or fatalities linked to the defect.

To address the issue, Tesla began rolling out an over-the-air (OTA) software update on October 19, 2023, to affected vehicles in the U.S., implementing a fix that prevents the overvoltage breakdown and subsequent component stress. As of January 23, 2025, 99% of the impacted vehicles in the U.S. have already received the necessary software update. Owners who have installed software version 2023.38.4 or later are not required to take any additional action, and no service visits are necessary. Tesla does not plan to offer reimbursement under the recall, as all affected vehicles remain covered under the new vehicle warranty.
The automaker plans to notify Tesla stores and service centers about the recall on January 28, 2025, while owner notification letters will be mailed starting March 25, 2025. Vehicles produced after October 11, 2023, were not affected, as they were equipped with the updated software at the time of manufacturing.
