General Motors (GM) has issued a safety recall affecting 70,768 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks from the 2022 model year due to a defect in the chrome front grille deflectors. The recall, identified under NHTSA Recall No. 25V-060, was announced after reports indicated that attachment points holding the grille deflector in place could fracture over time, potentially causing the part to detach while driving.

According to GM, the defect increases the risk of a crash if the grille deflector separates unexpectedly. Affected vehicles were produced between November 9, 2021, and September 29, 2022, and only include those with chrome grille deflectors manufactured after a mid-cycle enhancement in 2022. Vehicles with non-chrome deflectors or different grille designs, such as the 2500/3500 models, are not included in the recall. The defect was traced to grille deflectors supplied by Minth Tennessee International, whose attachment points may not withstand expected loads over time.

GM’s investigation began after a customer reported a grille deflector detaching while driving. The company initially closed its inquiry in May 2024 after finding no defect trend. However, a renewed investigation in December 2024 uncovered an increase in related complaints, leading to the recall decision on January 30, 2025. GM identified 1,225 field complaints linked to the issue, including four allegations of accidents, though no injuries have been reported.
GM is currently developing a remedy and will notify dealers on February 6, 2025. Interim owner notifications are set to begin on March 24, 2025, with details on a permanent fix to follow. Affected owners will be eligible for reimbursement for related repairs under GM’s reimbursement plan.
