U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Area Port of Douglas, Arizona, thwarted an attempted alien smuggling operation, arresting a 28-year-old Ecuadoran national and detaining a 16-year-old U.S. citizen. The incident occurred on February 11 when the minor attempted to drive through the primary inspection lane in a Toyota Tacoma with an adult passenger who falsely claimed U.S. citizenship.

During the initial inspection, CBP officers identified inconsistencies in the passenger’s documentation and referred the vehicle for secondary screening. Further examination confirmed that the passenger was not the rightful bearer of the Arizona State Identification card he presented. The teenager claimed the man was a friend, but authorities found no connection between the two. A background check revealed the adult was an Ecuadoran national with an outstanding extradition warrant from New York for a fatal hit-and-run.

The minor was taken into custody, while the Ecuadoran national was turned over to the Douglas Police Department and transported to the Cochise County Jail to await extradition. CBP officers credited their training and vigilance in preventing the illegal entry of a wanted individual. The agency emphasized its commitment to enforcing immigration laws and maintaining national security at ports of entry.
