A South Carolina woman is recovering after suffering a medical emergency at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, thanks to the life-saving efforts of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. The incident occurred on January 5 when 74-year-old Mary Mallette collapsed near the CBP primary inspection area after arriving from Johannesburg, South Africa. CBP officers Joe Manor and William Graham quickly responded, providing emergency medical care that helped stabilize her before paramedics arrived.

Supervisor Manor was the first to witness Mallette’s collapse and immediately assessed her condition. Officer Graham followed, retrieving emergency medical equipment, including an automatic external defibrillator (AED), and alerting Atlanta Fire and Rescue. As Graham administered basic life support, Mallette lost consciousness and had no detectable pulse. He began CPR while Manor applied the AED. Shortly after, she regained a pulse and began breathing on her own, allowing emergency personnel to take over upon arrival.

Mallette’s condition required continued monitoring, and Graham maintained communication with her despite her limited mobility by asking her to blink in response to questions. His military background, which included combat life-saver training, played a key role in his ability to provide care. Following treatment at an Atlanta-area hospital, Mallette was discharged to continue her recovery at home in Charleston.
