Chrysler, operating under FCA US, LLC, has issued a safety recall affecting over 63,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs from model years 2017 to 2019. The defect, identified as Recall No. 25V-011 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), involves the potential for the input shaft to move uncontrollably inward. This movement can cause wear or damage to the range shift sleeve, splines, or range fork. Such damage could lead to an unexpected loss of motive power or a failure of the PARK function, increasing the risk of crashes and injuries.
The affected vehicles were manufactured between October 11, 2016, and February 20, 2019, when the defect was corrected in production. Jeep Cherokees outside the recall either lack the PTU or were built with a different or properly seated component. FCA US estimates that approximately 2% of the recalled vehicles contain the defect.

Drivers may detect early warning signs, such as a “Service 4WD” message on the dashboard, unusual noises, vibrations, or a change in driving quality. FCA US has announced a voluntary safety recall and is in the process of developing a remedy. The company’s reimbursement plan, submitted in October 2024, covers costs incurred by owners for defect-related repairs prior to official notifications.
The recall process includes dealer notifications starting January 23, 2025, and owner notifications beginning February 13, 2025.
