Authorities launched an investigation on January 18 after Newtown Township police responded to a 911 call at 5:29 p.m. from Ash himself. According to the criminal complaint, Ash admitted to dispatchers that he killed the dogs after becoming angry following a visit with his mother at a nursing home. He also stated that he had inflicted self-harm. Officers arrived to find Ash in blood-stained clothing as he exited the home. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

Inside the residence, police discovered evidence of extensive violence. Investigators determined that Ash had initially abused the dogs by kicking and hitting them before using kitchen knives to stab them to death. A search of the home revealed a bloodied scene on the first floor, including a broken steak knife blade lodged inside one of the dogs. A second knife, an 8-inch chef’s knife, was found in the sink wrapped in a bloody rag. Blood-covered paper towels were also located on the kitchen counter. The two deceased dogs, identified as a 7-year-old Beagle-Lab mix named Blake and a 9-year-old Beagle-Collie mix named Shyla, were found lying next to each other with multiple stab wounds.
