The recent decision by the Washington County Board of Education to adjust meeting schedules has sparked significant concern within the community, leading to the launch of a Change.org petition demanding a reversal. The new schedule shifts business meetings from 6 p.m. to 4 p.m. and work sessions from 3 p.m. to 1 p.m., changes implemented without public consultation. Community members argue these earlier times hinder participation by working parents, educators, and other stakeholders, limiting their ability to engage with critical school system decisions.

The petition, which has gathered 234 signatures so far, underscores the need for transparency and accessibility in governance. Advocates highlight that the meetings are a vital platform for public input and that the revised schedule disproportionately excludes those who must balance work or school obligations. Many also point out that the decision impacts the board’s ability to gain meaningful insights from the community as it navigates key issues.
The board has responded, citing cost-saving benefits and potential operational improvements as reasons for the scheduling change. Board President Dr. April Zentmeyer emphasized that the adjustment is a trial and includes a new question portal to increase engagement opportunities. “We are trying the new schedule as a cost savings benefit. No schedule is perfect, but we hope that with the business meeting first and student recognitions and comments following nearer the current schedule, we can accommodate everyone,” stated Zentmeyer. “A new feature will be a question portal available during comments that will allow more people to participate and have their questions answered. It is a trial. If it doesn’t work, we will revisit.”

As the board plans to evaluate the trial period, community members continue to rally support for restoring the original meeting times. Many commenters argue that public consultation and feedback are essential to fostering trust and ensuring equitable access to the board’s decision-making processes. The petition aims to send a clear message that inclusivity and transparency must remain central to education governance.
The next school board meeting with public comment will take place on Tuesday, February 18th, starting at 4 PM. A public information act request was filed for any internal communication related to the meeting time change, and is expected to be fulfilled within 30 days.
