The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. by neighbors, and the Deal Island-Chance Volunteer Fire Company responded with two alarms and 40 firefighters. It took approximately two hours to bring the fire under control. Strong winds contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, which started in the primary structure, a 32-by-60-foot recreational building with living quarters. The flames then engulfed three additional buildings: a vacant single-family dwelling, a 12-by-24-foot shed, and a 12-by-12-foot shed.

The structures were destroyed, with estimated losses of $500,000 for the recreational building and $100,000 for its contents. No injuries were reported. Smoke alarms were present in the primary structure, but there were no fire alarms or sprinkler systems. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Deputy State Fire Marshal’s office, with the area of origin believed to be the recreational building.

The property, a 20-acre island owned by Island Sunset Incorporated, posed significant logistical challenges for firefighting efforts. Despite the difficulties, crews successfully prevented further spread to other parts of the island.
