One of the key provisions of the order mandates the renaming of Mount Denali back to Mount McKinley in recognition of the 25th U.S. president, William McKinley. The change is intended to honor McKinley’s leadership during the Spanish-American War and his contributions to economic growth and industrialization. The surrounding national park will retain the name Denali National Park and Preserve. The Secretary of the Interior has been directed to update the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) within 30 days to reflect the reinstated name.
The order also includes the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Highlighting its importance to the U.S. economy, energy production, and fisheries, the administration seeks to emphasize its integral role in the nation’s development. The directive requires federal agencies to update all references to the Gulf, ensuring consistency in maps, contracts, and other official documents.

Additionally, the executive order reconstitutes the U.S. Board on Geographic Names with new appointees tasked with upholding the policy of honoring patriotic contributions. The Secretary of the Interior is instructed to engage with local and Native organizations to ensure cultural representation in landmark names. As part of preparations for the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, public input will be sought to identify other figures and events deserving commemoration.
The order concludes by emphasizing compliance with applicable laws and clarifying that it does not create enforceable legal rights for individuals.
