The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a new public service announcement (PSA) titled “It Only Takes 19 Seconds” as part of its Know2Protect® campaign. The PSA demonstrates how quickly an online interaction can turn dangerous, using a scenario involving a gaming platform. It has been aired during major NASCAR Cup Series races and is featured on the NFL Network during the football season. These efforts aim to reach millions of viewers, educating them on the steps they can take to protect young people online. Viewers are directed to Know2Protect.gov for more resources, including safety tips, downloadable tools, and guidance on initiating conversations about these risks.
Since its inception in April, the Know2Protect campaign has partnered with sports leagues, technology companies, and community organizations to amplify its message. NASCAR and the NFL have been particularly instrumental, leveraging their platforms to engage audiences through events, newsletters, and social media. Notably, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents have attended events such as the NFL Flag Championship Series and NASCAR’s YellaWood 500 to provide in-person education and resources.

Know2Protect is the first federal campaign dedicated to preventing online CSEA through education and awareness. Its in-person outreach, conducted through Project iGuardian, has delivered over 1,000 presentations nationwide, reaching more than 100,000 participants in 2024 alone. The campaign also includes classroom resources and virtual trainings to help educators and parents keep children safe online.
DHS emphasizes the importance of early intervention. Suspected cases of online CSEA should be reported to the HSI Tip Line at 1-866-347-2423 or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s CyberTipline. Immediate dangers or abductions should be reported to local law enforcement and the NCMEC Tip Line at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).
