Approximately 2,500 voter registration applications were processed during this period, and irregularities were detected as part of the routine process of entering information into the Statewide Uniform Registry of Electors (SURE) system. The nature and scope of the fraudulent activity are currently under review, with law enforcement involved in the investigation.
As this investigation unfolds, it is important to note Pennsylvania’s voter identification rules for both in-person and absentee/mail-in voting, which remain a critical component of the election process. While voters do not need to present photo ID at polling stations, first-time voters in a precinct are required to show identification, which can be either photo or non-photo. Acceptable forms of ID include Pennsylvania driver’s licenses, U.S. passports, utility bills, and bank statements, among others.

The requirements are stricter for absentee and mail-in voting. When applying to vote by absentee or mail-in ballot, voters must provide proof of identification, such as a driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number. If these are not available, voters must provide a copy of a photo ID with their ballot application, such as a U.S. passport or a Pennsylvania-issued ID.
These measures are designed to uphold the integrity of the electoral system while allowing broad access to voting. However, cases like the current voter registration fraud investigation in Lancaster County highlight the ongoing need for vigilance in safeguarding elections.
