Col. Marsh began by expressing his gratitude to all attendees, underscoring the significance of the collaborations forged during his tenure. “Partnerships, mutual aid agreements, and simply working together have put Fort Detrick at the forefront of the Army thanks to all of you,” he remarked, highlighting the collective effort that has propelled the installation to prominence.

Acknowledging the critical role of community and state support, Marsh said, “As I look across the room, each and every one of you contributes to the success of the installation. This city, county, and state continue to embrace those who live or work on Fort Detrick, making the installation a valued part of the community, and I thank you.”

The meeting served as a platform to foster collaboration, exchange insights, and address pressing issues collectively. Col. Marsh provided a “State of the Installation” address, emphasizing initiatives and projects that have positively impacted the surrounding community.

Education was a key focus, with Marsh highlighting reduced tuition rates offered by local colleges for Active Duty personnel, which eliminates out-of-pocket costs. He also praised the exceptional education provided to military children by a school district ranked among the top ten in Maryland. Environmental conservation efforts, mutual aid agreements, recruitment, and the transition of soldiers into civilian roles were also significant topics of discussion.

These collaborative efforts underscore the importance of community cooperation in achieving shared goals. Col. Marsh encouraged continued support and a proactive approach to addressing challenges, reflecting a “can-do” attitude essential for success.

One notable initiative discussed was the Maryland Purple Star School Program. Approved by the Maryland General Assembly in 2022, this program recognizes schools that excel in supporting military-connected students and their families. Currently, no schools in Frederick County hold the Purple Star designation. Col. Marsh expressed his hope to see this initiative realized in the future and pledged to pass the idea to the incoming garrison commander.

Reflecting on his tenure, Col. Marsh stated, “This has been one of my favorite jobs. It’s not the job itself but the people I work with and the sincerity of this community. It’s been a pleasure, and I honestly appreciate the hard work you all do each day and the support of the installation.”

The gathering highlighted the strong ties between Fort Detrick and the local community, showcasing the collaborative spirit that has been a hallmark of Col. Marsh’s leadership. As he prepares to move on to his next assignment, the partnerships and initiatives he championed are set to continue, ensuring that Fort Detrick remains a vital part of the community fabric.
