Hagerstown, MD News (9/9/2023) – The skies over Hagerstown were buzzing with excitement and nostalgia as aviation enthusiasts and history buffs flocked to the 2023 Hagerstown Wings & Wheels Expo, held on Saturday, September 9th, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. This year’s event, sponsored by industry giants such as SNC Aircraft Corporation and Martin’s Famous Potato Rolls, saw a record-breaking turnout.

The expo, hosted at the Hagerstown Regional Airport, paid tribute to the aircraft and equipment utilized during the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Crowds were treated to an impressive lineup of iconic relics, including two Bell UH-1 “Huey” helicopters, the Fairchild C-123K Provider, a Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar, and a C-47. The event also featured an array of military vehicles and living historians who shared insights into the gear, uniforms, and weaponry used by U.S. soldiers during that tumultuous period in history.

One of the highlights of the event was the Hagerstown Aviation Museum’s extensive collection of vintage aircraft, many of which were built right in Hagerstown. Families had the unique opportunity to climb aboard historical marvels like the Fairchild C-82, C-119 Flying Boxcars, and the C-123K. The museum showcased other locally manufactured aircraft, such as the 1928 Kreider Reisner KR-31 biplane and Fairchild models 22, 24, PT-19, and PT-26.

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, open-cockpit flying experiences were available in the museum’s 1943 Fairchild PT-19 Primary Trainer and the B-25J Mitchell “Panchito” from the Delaware Aviation Museum. The excitement continued with rides in the CAF’s Boeing PT-17 Stearman biplane, a unique chance to relive aviation history.

Visiting aircraft, including a C-47 from the Air Heritage Museum and the restored Bell UH-1 “Huey” helicopter from Liberty Warbirds, added to the event’s allure. EAA Chapter 36 even offered free Young Eagle airplane rides for kids aged 8-17, sparking the imaginations of the next generation of aviators.

The expo wasn’t just about wings; it showcased an impressive array of wheels as well. Antique and classic cars, trucks, military vehicles, antique tractors, motorcycles, tractor-trailers, cranes, and more were on display. Vehicle owners seized the opportunity to register their prized possessions on-site, with the first 200 receiving a custom event dash plaque.

Besides the captivating aviation and vehicular displays, local vendors tantalized taste buds with lunch and ice cream. Families reveled in the sense of community as they explored Hagerstown’s rich aviation history, with museum merchandise, toys, books, hats, and T-shirts available for purchase.

What made the Wings & Wheels Expo even more remarkable was its accessibility. Entry was by donation, with a suggested $5 per person. Donations went towards supporting future museum events and the rehabilitation of the museum’s new home, the original 1943 Fairchild Aircraft Flight Test Hangar, known as the Dome Hangar.

The 2023 Hagerstown Wings & Wheels Expo was a resounding success, bringing together history enthusiasts, aviation aficionados, and families for a day filled with excitement and nostalgia.
