Washington D.C. – A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched the NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Thursday, October 1, 2026, carrying four new astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). The crew, comprising NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov, embarked on their journey at 11:10 a.m. EDT, commencing a science expedition aboard the orbiting laboratory.
The launch signifies a continued demonstration of American capability in human spaceflight and highlights the strength of commercial partnerships, according to NASA. The mission is designed to further important work on the ISS while gathering experience and developing capabilities essential for future ambitious missions to the Moon and beyond. The spacecraft achieved a historic milestone by docking autonomously to the forward port of the station’s Harmony module just over seven hours after launch, marking the fastest launch-to-docking by a U.S. spacecraft in the history of the International Space Station.

During the approximately 7-hour, 50-minute flight, SpaceX monitored automated spacecraft maneuvers from its mission control center in Hawthorne, California, while NASA oversaw space station operations from its Mission Control Center at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. NASA provided live coverage of the arrival, including rendezvous, docking, and hatch opening, which commenced at 5:20 p.m. EDT. Following docking, the crew members transitioned out of their spacesuits and prepared cargo for offload before the hatch to the Harmony module was opened around 8:45 p.m. EDT.
Upon arrival, Watkins, Delaney, Kutryk, and Teteryatnikov joined the Expedition 75 crew, which already includes NASA astronaut Anil Menon and Roscosmos cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina. The arrival of Crew-13 will precede the return to Earth of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 mission, carrying astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev.
The scientific objectives for Crew-13 aboard the International Space Station are diverse and aim to advance research in several key areas. The crew will utilize microgravity to produce human stem cell-derived tissues, a process anticipated to improve personalized medicine, disease modeling, and pharmaceutical testing for conditions such as heart disease and Parkinson’s. Additionally, their work will involve exploring crop production through a new, largely autonomous plant growth system and investigating how plants develop outside of dedicated research facilities. Human health studies will also continue, focusing on factors linked to blood-flow abnormalities in microgravity, and the crew will test a novel inflight diagnostic device designed to monitor astronaut health.
Crew-13’s mission is part of NASA’s Low Earth Orbit Program, which fosters partnerships with private companies to ensure dependable access to space. This program supports research and development aboard the space station and is instrumental in enabling future missions beyond low Earth orbit.
