The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued urgent warnings for consumers to immediately stop using two distinct models of combination natural gas and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, as well as combination smoke and CO detectors, due to a critical failure to alert users to dangerous gas and smoke levels. These devices, sold under various brand names and through numerous online retailers, pose a significant risk of serious injury or death from undetected carbon monoxide leaks and fires.

The first product under scrutiny is the “4 in 1 Plug in Natural Gas and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Model KH158.” The CPSC reports that these detectors have been found to fail to provide any alert when dangerous levels of carbon monoxide are present. Approximately 376,974 units of this model, manufactured by Shenzhen Kanghua Shengshi Industrial Co., LTD, doing business as KH Alert, have been sold in the United States. The detectors, described as white, gray, or black plastic units with a digital display and indicator lights for power, fault, and alarm, were available for purchase on platforms including Amazon.com, eBay.com, AliExpress, microcenter.com, and snapklik.com. Consumers purchased these devices individually and in multipacks between June 2024 and July 2026 for prices ranging from $13 to $140. The CPSC is aware of 91 reports detailing the failure of these units to alarm in the presence of gas or carbon monoxide leaks. The manufacturer has not agreed to a recall of these potentially life-threatening devices.

In addition to the KH158 model, the CPSC has also issued a separate warning for “TJTFJS 2-in-1 Carbon Monoxide (CO) & Smoke Detectors, model TJ00907.” These detectors have demonstrated a critical flaw where they fail to alert consumers to the presence of hazardous smoke and fire, thereby increasing the risk of serious injury or death. These white plastic detectors, which may feature a digital display and were sometimes sold without a model number clearly indicated on the packaging, were manufactured in China by guangzhouzhongbokejiyouxiangongsi. These units were sold online through Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Kmart.com, Sears.com, and Desertcart.com. The Chinese seller has reportedly been unresponsive to the CPSC’s requests for a product recall.
The CPSC strongly urges all consumers who own either the KH158 model or the TJTFJS model to immediately stop using them and dispose of them properly. The agency emphasizes the importance of installing new, functioning carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms to ensure household safety. For carbon monoxide detectors, consumers should ensure they are battery-operated or have battery backup, and they should be installed on every level of the home, as well as outside sleeping areas. Regular testing and battery replacement are crucial for all detectors. The CPSC also advises consumers to purchase detectors that meet the UL 2034 safety standard for carbon monoxide alarms and UL 217 for smoke alarms. Any consumers who have experienced a safety incident involving these products, or any dangerous product, are encouraged to report it to the CPSC at http://www.SaferProducts.gov.
