BMW Recalls Over 300,000 Vehicles Due to Potential Fire Risk from Faulty Starters

BMW of North America, LLC is initiating a significant safety recall affecting more than 300,000 light vehicles due to a potential fire hazard stemming from a faulty engine starter component. The recall, which also includes a small number of Toyota Supras, addresses an issue where unexpected wear on an internal starter component could lead to the starter not functioning properly, potentially causing the engine to fail to start. In more severe circumstances, this malfunction could result in a thermal event or fire, either during the engine starting process or while the engine is running.

The comprehensive recall encompasses several BMW models produced between 2021 and 2025. The affected BMW vehicles include the 2022-2025 2 Series Coupe, 2021-2023 5 Series, 2022-2026 Z4, 2023-2024 4 Series Gran Coupe, 2023-2024 4 Series Convertible, 2023-2024 4 Series Coupe, 2023-2024 3 Series, 2021-2025 X4, and 2021-2024 X3. Additionally, a limited number of 2023-2024 Toyota Supra vehicles are part of this recall. The primary component identified as problematic is the engine starter, manufactured by Valeo, a French supplier. The issue appears to be related to a specific production configuration of this starter.

The defect arises from unexpected wear on an internal component of the engine starter. This wear can impede the starter’s functionality, preventing the engine from starting. While the recall documents indicate that the estimated percentage of vehicles with the defect is a mere 0.1%, the total number of potentially affected vehicles is substantial. BMW determined the population of vehicles for this recall by examining assembly and service information, along with supplier production records. Although BMW has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this specific issue, the potential for a fire hazard necessitates this broad recall. For Toyota Supra vehicles included in this recall, Toyota has indicated that there are no reported field technical reports or warranty claims related to this condition.

Owners of the potentially affected vehicles will be notified by First Class mail and will be instructed to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW or Toyota dealer to have the remedy performed free of charge. The proposed remedy involves replacing the faulty engine starter with a unit that features a different design. BMW has stated that this new component is designed to address the wear issue experienced by the recalled starters. The recall schedule indicates that dealer notification is set to begin and conclude on July 8, 2026, with owner notification planned to commence and conclude on August 28, 2026. Owners will be able to check if their vehicle’s VIN is included in the recall by August 28, 2026. In instances where owners have already paid for the repair before the recall notification, a reimbursement plan is in place, provided the repair was performed according to BMW Group’s or Toyota’s reimbursement policy. BMW has also advised owners to park affected vehicles outside due to the potential fire risk.
