Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Invests Nearly $200,000 in Fishing and Boating Education Initiatives

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has announced the awarding of $197,446 in grants to support 16 educational projects across 13 counties, along with one statewide initiative. These funds, distributed through the PFBC’s R3 Education Grant Program, aim to foster new and renewed interest in fishing and boating within the Commonwealth by encouraging the recruitment of new participants, the retention of current enthusiasts, and the reactivation of former anglers and boaters. This investment is an increase from the previous year’s funding, which supported 16 projects across 10 counties and reached over 11,000 individuals.

The R3 Education Grant Program is designed to connect Pennsylvanians with the state’s waterways through various educational efforts. The awarded grants will enable recipients to acquire necessary equipment, develop educational resources, cover transportation costs, and fund other expenses crucial for the successful implementation of these R3 programs. These initiatives are intended to introduce individuals to the recreational and conservation aspects of fishing and boating, potentially cultivating lifelong passions and a greater appreciation for aquatic resources. All funded projects are expected to be completed by June 30, 2027.

The grant recipients and their funded projects include a diverse range of organizations and educational institutions. In Allegheny County, the Anglers Fishing Club of Pittsburgh will receive support for its SMART Anglers and Catfish Fishing Skills programs. Blair County’s Hollidaysburg Area School District and the Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center will benefit from grants for their “Art & Science of Fly Fishing” initiative. Butler County’s Fishing For Memories Inc. has been awarded funding for its “Youth Driven Fishing” program, while Chester County’s Stroud Water Research Center, Inc. will use its grant to implement a “Canoeing and Angling Series for Underrepresented Young Adults in Outdoor Recreation.”

Clarion County’s Keystone School District will support its Jr./Sr. High School Fishing Club, and Clearfield County’s Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District will further its “Organization on the Water” project. In Dauphin County, the Harrisburg Area YMCA will expand its “Reel Fishing Outdoor Adventures at the YMCA.” Elk County’s Jim Zwald Chapter 314 of Trout Unlimited will offer an “Introduction to Fly Fishing,” and Lebanon County’s Doc Fritchey Chapter 108 of Trout Unlimited will host a “Learn to Fly Fish” program. Luzerne County’s Wyoming Area School District has received funding for its “Fly Fishing Education Program.”

Montgomery County’s College Settlement of Philadelphia will enhance its “Strengthening Youth Fishing and Boating Education” efforts, and Philadelphia County will see multiple initiatives supported. These include programs from CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia focusing on “Free Public Boating & Fishing Programs in Environmental Justice Neighborhoods,” the Delaware River City Corp (dba Riverfront North Partnership) for “Community Fishing on the Delaware River,” and the John Bartram Association (dba Bartram’s Garden) to “Double Tidal Schuylkill River Access at Bartram’s Garden.” Washington County’s California Area School District will implement its “Reel Opportunities” program. Additionally, a statewide grant will support the Wildlife Leadership Academy’s “Stepping Stones Program,” PA Bass, and PA Brookies Program.
