Chrysler Recalls Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer Models Over Critical Safety Software Issues

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is initiating two separate voluntary safety recalls affecting various Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer models due to critical software defects that could compromise vehicle safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified these issues, which could lead to a loss of critical driving information or compromised safety systems, potentially resulting in vehicle crashes without warning. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail, and dealers will perform software updates to address the defects.

Recall 26V413: Transmission Shift Position Indication Loss

This recall encompasses certain 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles, 2023 Jeep Wagoneer vehicles, 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles, and 2024 Jeep Wagoneer L vehicles. The issue stems from a shifter module software that may lead to a loss of the transmission shift position indication. This malfunction violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 102, which mandates that the identification of shift positions be clearly displayed to the driver. The problem arises because the suspect software may prevent the vehicle from properly displaying the shift positions and their relationship to each other. While there are no warnings prior to the failure, a “Service Shifter” message may appear after the issue arises. The software defect affects a total of seven potentially involved vehicles across these models, with 100% of them estimated to have the defect. Production dates for the affected Jeep Grand Cherokees range from July 22, 2024, to August 8, 2024. The affected 2023 Jeep Wagoneer was produced on February 21, 2023. The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L involved was produced on July 2, 2024, and the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer L was produced on December 18, 2023. Chrysler will notify dealers about this recall on or about July 9, 2026, and owners will begin to be notified on or about August 21, 2026, with VINs becoming searchable on July 9, 2026.

Recall 26V414: Electronic Stability Control and Brake Assist Issues

A second, larger recall addresses potential issues with the Brake System Control Module (BSCM) software in certain 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L vehicles. This software defect may lead to the disabling of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system and a loss of electronic brake assist. These potential failures violate FMVSS No. 126, which requires ESC to be operational during all driving phases, and FMVSS No. 135, which pertains to light vehicle brake system performance. The safety risk associated with this defect is significant, as a loss of ESC and electronic brake assist can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. While there are no warnings before the failure, multiple warning lights may illuminate on the instrument panel once the BSCM has faulted. This recall impacts a total of 11,980 potentially involved vehicles. The production period for the affected 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L spans from June 16, 2025, to February 16, 2026, with 3,352 units potentially affected. The 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer has a similar production window from June 10, 2025, to February 16, 2026, with 8,628 units potentially involved. ZF Group is identified as the supplier of the involved component. Chrysler will notify dealers on or about July 9, 2026, and owners will be notified starting on or about July 30, 2026. VINs for these vehicles will be searchable on July 9, 2026.

The remedy for both recalls involves a software update performed by dealerships at no cost to the owner. Chrysler has stated that the remedy is a new revision of the software that corrects the identified defect. Owners of affected vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles and to park them outside due to the potential safety risks until the remedy can be applied. The company will be utilizing its general reimbursement plan on file for any expenses incurred related to this recall. The decision to conduct these recalls was made by FCA US after internal investigations began on November 4, 2025, for the shifter issue and April 7, 2026, for the brake system issue. These investigations involved extensive reviews of warranty data, field records, customer assistance records, and consultations with engineering and manufacturing teams to understand the scope and potential failure modes. On June 10, 2026, FCA US recognized that a vehicle build issue existed that could lead to a noncompliance with federal safety standards. Subsequently, on June 25, 2026, the company formally determined that a noncompliance existed and initiated the recall process.
