After Over 30 Incidents, Kobalt Yard Tools Recalled for Fire Hazard Risk

Approximately 554,780 Kobalt brand yard power tools featuring USB-C batteries are being recalled due to a fire hazard, according to a recent announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall specifically targets trimmers, blowers, mowers, chainsaws, and pruning saws equipped with 24V and 48V batteries that include a USB-C charging port.

The hazard arises when consumers attempt to charge these lithium-ion batteries through the USB-C port while they are still inserted into the yard power tools. This action can lead to a short-circuit within the battery, creating a significant risk of fire and potential for serious injury. While no injuries or property damage have been reported to date, there have been 34 instances where the batteries have reportedly produced smoke, sparked, or ignited during charging while in the tool.

Consumers who own the affected Kobalt yard power tools are strongly advised to immediately cease charging the batteries via the USB-C port while they are connected to the tool. To resolve this issue, Greenworks Tools, the importer of these products, is offering a free replacement battery that does not have the USB-C charging functionality. Customers will need to visit a dedicated recall registration page on the Greenworks Tools website and complete a form to receive their replacement battery.

In addition to the new battery, consumers participating in the recall will also receive a charger adapter, a warning label to affix to their existing yard power tool, an updated product manual, and a prepaid shipping label with instructions for returning the recalled batteries. The affected products were sold nationwide at Lowe’s stores and online at Lowes.com between January 2026 and May 2026, with prices ranging from $20 to $482. The batteries included in the recall are 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah, 6.0Ah, and 8.0Ah capacities. Some 6.0Ah and 3.0Ah batteries were also sold separately.
