Washington D.C. – A citizen of Slovakia residing in the United States as a green card holder has been arrested for allegedly registering to vote and casting a ballot in federal elections in New Jersey while falsely claiming U.S. citizenship. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) took the individual into custody on July 1st.
The suspect, identified as Marian Charitun, is accused of registering to vote in New Jersey by falsely stating he was a United States citizen. He subsequently voted in the 2022 general election, which included races for the U.S. House of Representatives. Following these actions, Charitun reportedly applied for U.S. citizenship, submitting documents to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and asserting that he had never registered to vote nor participated in any federal, state, or local elections.

Charitun is now facing federal charges for two alleged offenses: illegally voting in a federal election and making false statements during his application for U.S. citizenship. These charges stem from an investigation by HSI New Jersey, conducted in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and USCIS. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, which is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin D. Bleiberg. The prosecution is part of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Election Integrity Task Force, a multi-agency initiative aimed at safeguarding the electoral process within the district.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has indicated a clear stance that individuals unlawfully voting in American elections will be identified, apprehended, and face legal consequences, potentially including criminal charges and deportation. The emphasis of this enforcement action is on ensuring that only eligible U.S. citizens participate in the election of American leaders. This case serves as a reminder of the legal requirements and penalties associated with voter registration and participation for non-citizens residing in the United States.
