The Board of Zoning Appeals plays a critical role in the fair and consistent application of the Town’s zoning laws. This board is responsible for reviewing appeals of zoning decisions, considering requests for variances and special exceptions, and interpreting zoning regulations. Meetings for this board are scheduled as needed, but are required to occur at least once per quarter at Town Hall.
The Planning Commission focuses on Shepherdstown’s physical development. Its responsibilities include reviewing and assessing proposals for new construction and modifications to existing structures, as well as evaluating proposed large-scale developments. This commission also contributes to the long-range vision for the town’s growth and evolution. The Planning Commission meets monthly on the third Monday at Town Hall.
Additionally, the Tree Commission is dedicated to fostering and maintaining a healthy, diverse, and aesthetically pleasing streetscape within Shepherdstown. The commission is tasked with maintaining an inventory of all trees on town property, actively monitoring their health, and ensuring their proper care. It also addresses concerns from residents whose properties are impacted by town trees and plantings. This commission convenes on the second Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM at Town Hall.
Residents interested in serving on any of these boards are encouraged to download and complete the application form available for the Planning Commission and Board of Appeals positions. For any inquiries regarding these volunteer opportunities, individuals can contact Town Clerk Amy L. Boyd at 304-876-2398 or via email at aboyd@shepherdstown.gov. Serving on these town commissions and boards is an excellent avenue for community members to directly influence the direction and quality of life in Shepherdstown.
