Jefferson County Sheriff Tom Hansen has been sworn in as the new President of the West Virginia Association of County Officials (WVACo), a statewide organization that advocates for and represents county governments across West Virginia. This appointment places a Jefferson County constitutional officer at the helm of an organization crucial to shaping discussions and policy for all 55 of the state’s counties.
As the newly elected president, Sheriff Hansen will be instrumental in fostering collaboration among county officials from various branches of local government, including commissioners, county clerks, circuit clerks, assessors, prosecuting attorneys, and fellow sheriffs. WVACo plays a vital role in advancing the interests of counties before state leaders, supporting the ongoing development of professionalism within county governments, and ensuring the continued effectiveness of these local administrations throughout West Virginia.

Sheriff Hansen brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He began his career with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in 1995, progressing through various roles such as patrol deputy, detective, field training officer, and notably, served as the department’s first School Resource Officer at Jefferson High School. Following a distinguished career in law enforcement, he was elected Sheriff of Jefferson County in 2020 and is currently serving his second term, having begun it in January 2025. His extensive background is expected to provide valuable leadership to WVACo.
The Jefferson County Commission has extended its congratulations to Sheriff Hansen on this significant achievement. They anticipate his leadership will be beneficial to counties across the entire state as they navigate the complexities of local governance and advocate for their constituents at the state level.
