More than 250 members of the National Guard, comprising both Soldiers and Airmen from across the organization, were honored at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., on May 18. The event, designated as National Guard Day, aimed to highlight the Guard’s extensive service, the sacrifices made by its members, and its vital role within communities. The day featured on-field recognition as part of the pre-game ceremonies before the Washington Nationals faced off against the New York Mets.
The gathering underscored the National Guard’s distinctive dual mission: serving as the ready reserve for the Army and Air Force, prepared for combat deployment, while simultaneously providing critical support during domestic emergencies. This dual responsibility means Guard members are frequently called upon to respond to crises at home, ranging from natural disasters to public safety incidents, in addition to their federal duties.

A significant moment of the day involved U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe of the West Virginia Air National Guard throwing the ceremonial first pitch. This gesture marked a personal milestone for Staff Sgt. Wolfe, who had been recovering from critical injuries sustained in November during a targeted shooting attack while serving in the district with Joint Task Force District of Columbia. His ability to throw the first pitch after months of rehabilitation represented a powerful symbol of resilience and recovery.
U.S. Army Maj. Ryan Reynolds, also from the West Virginia Army National Guard, presented the game ball to the Nationals’ starting pitcher. Maj. Reynolds was part of the initial response team to the shooting incident that wounded Staff Sgt. Wolfe and tragically claimed the life of U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, a military police officer with the West Virginia Army National Guard who was serving with JTF-DC. Reynolds’ actions during the incident involved running toward the gunfire, subduing the assailant, ensuring the safety of fellow service members and civilians, and providing initial medical care to the wounded.
Other National Guard members participated in various on-field roles during the game’s opening ceremonies. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Vicki Goldberg of the D.C. Army National Guard performed the national anthem, while pilots from the D.C. Air National Guard’s 113th Wing conducted an F-16 Fighting Falcon flyover of the stadium. U.S. Army Spc. Matthew David, representing the Maryland Army National Guard, and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Destiny Melendez from the D.C. Air National Guard, delivered the starting lineup cards to the umpires. Staff Sgt. Melendez had the honor of announcing, “Play ball!” to the cheering crowd, reflecting the immense energy and enthusiasm of the event.
This event builds upon a long-standing tradition of honoring military service in the nation’s capital, with National Guard participation at Nationals games dating back to the opening of Nationals Park in 2008. In its inaugural season, Guard members were involved in unfurling large American flags during pre-game ceremonies and supporting military appreciation tributes. The collaboration between the National Guard and the Washington Nationals highlights a shared commitment to community engagement and the recognition of service.
