The deceased has been identified as Robert Dempsey, a 40-year-old resident of Ellicott City. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Mr. Dempsey deceased at the scene. Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that Mr. Dempsey was outside of his emergency work vehicle, engaged in the task of setting up cones to manage traffic on the ramp from St. Barnabas Road. It was at this time that he was reportedly struck by a Mazda CX5. The driver of the Mazda, identified as Joshua Anderson, a 41-year-old from Fort Washington, was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Charges are pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.

Maryland State Police troopers from the College Park Barrack were dispatched to the scene following the report of the crash. Personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration were also on site to assist with managing the lane closures necessitated by the investigation. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the active and ongoing inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

This incident highlights the dangers faced by highway workers who are tasked with maintaining and improving the state’s roadways. The public is reminded to exercise extreme caution when approaching work zones, obeying all posted signs and reducing speed to ensure the safety of themselves and those working on or near the roadway.
