According to a recent announcement from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a nationwide operation has resulted in substantial seizures of illicit drugs and arrests, aiming to disrupt drug cartels and reduce the availability of fentanyl. Phase II of Operation Fentanyl Free America, which ran from January 12 to February 10, 2026, saw the confiscation of over 4.7 million fentanyl pills and nearly 2,396 pounds of fentanyl powder. This amount is equivalent to more than 57 million potentially deadly doses removed from communities in a single month.

The DEA has identified the elimination of fentanyl as a primary objective, seeking to enhance community safety by dismantling transnational criminal organizations and disrupting the financial infrastructure that supports them. This operation highlights the agency’s broader initiative, Fentanyl Free America, launched in October 2025, which encompasses targeted enforcement, oversight of DEA registrants within the established distribution system, and public awareness campaigns to curb both the supply and demand for illicit substances. This recent enforcement surge represents the second such targeted operation under this initiative.

Beyond fentanyl, the thirty-day operation also yielded significant seizures of other illicit substances and related contraband. Authorities confiscated 147,797 pounds of cocaine, nearly 21,000 pounds of methamphetamine, over 26 million methamphetamine pills, 1,183 pounds of heroin, and 65,000 pounds of illicit marijuana. Additionally, more than 1,500 firearms were seized, and the operation led to over 3,000 arrests across the country. This wide scope reflects the multi-substance trafficking patterns employed by transnational criminal organizations.

Specific regional successes were noted, including a significant seizure by the DEA Louisville Field Division’s Chattanooga Resident Office, which in January recovered approximately 17 kilograms of fentanyl, along with two industrial-grade pill presses and two kilo-brick presses. This single seizure is estimated to have prevented nearly 9 million potentially lethal doses of fentanyl from entering circulation. In Baltimore, an enforcement operation resulted in 43 arrests and the confiscation of various drugs, including 7 kilograms of cocaine, 2 kilograms of a heroin-fentanyl mixture, and 2 kilograms of fentanyl, along with 1,200 pounds of marijuana and 13 firearms. In Tucson, Arizona, nearly 600,000 counterfeit fentanyl pills were seized, preventing an estimated 173,000 potential fentanyl poisonings. The DEA New York Task Force also played a role, removing 60,000 fentanyl pills from circulation following the apprehension of a distributor linked to a cartel. In a separate development, Richie Pharmacal, a pharmaceutical distributor in Glasgow, Kentucky, was issued an Immediate Suspension Order in early February due to alleged compliance issues and violations of the Controlled Substances Act.

The DEA emphasizes its ongoing commitment to creating a fentanyl-free America and encourages public participation in efforts to safeguard communities. Further information and resources are available on DEA.gov/fentanylfree.
