Residents of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, are experiencing increased costs on their monthly electric and natural gas bills, according to a recent announcement from the Borough of Chambersburg. The Borough Electric Utility and Natural Gas Utility have been responding to customer inquiries regarding these higher-than-usual charges. Borough Manager Jeffrey Stonehill has attributed the increased expenses directly to the unusually cold winter weather, noting that this past winter ranks as the eleventh coldest on record.
Stonehill explained that colder temperatures, particularly when factoring in wind chill, directly correlate with higher household electricity and natural gas consumption, leading to increased utility bills. He reassured residents that the Borough’s electric and natural gas utilities maintain some of the lowest retail rates in Pennsylvania, which helps to mitigate the impact of these higher usage costs. Stonehill also emphasized that Borough utility rates themselves did not increase this winter. Instead, the rise in bills is a direct consequence of increased consumption driven by the recent colder-than-normal weather patterns. It is anticipated that utility bills will return to more typical amounts as the weather becomes milder. For customers who have questions about their utility statements, customer service is available on the first floor of the Utility Departments Addition to Borough Hall, located at 100 S. Second St. The department is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
