The newly revitalized Bench Initiative, reintroduced earlier this year, seeks to celebrate local artists while simultaneously improving shared public areas. This program builds upon Shepherdstown’s established history of public art, including a previous successful art-bench project sponsored by Shepherdstown Shares: A Response to Crisis, which provided a morale boost during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new benches are designed to embody the town’s history, values, and artistic spirit, with future installations planned as suitable locations are identified in collaboration with the Public Works Committee.

Two benches have been in development over the fall and early winter months, with local artists working on them in a studio space provided by the Town. Each bench is being created with the philosophy that art should be accessible, interactive, and a natural part of daily life. The first bench, set to be revealed on December 21, is the creation of local artist Danielle Corsetto. Mayor James Gatz expressed enthusiasm for the new artwork, describing it as something that will “warm your heart and bring a smile to your face.” He further emphasized that these benches are intended to be more than just places to sit; they are functional pieces of public art designed to foster community connection, support local talent, and contribute to the unique character of downtown Shepherdstown, reflecting the town’s commitment to creativity, community, and thoughtful use of public space.

The unveiling event will offer attendees hot chocolate and treats, encouraging residents and visitors to gather, admire the new bench, and enjoy the downtown atmosphere. This initiative also aims to support local businesses, with participants encouraged to patronize shops, restaurants, and other establishments while in town. The Bench Initiative is a component of the Town’s broader strategy to improve walkability, enhance public spaces, and elevate the overall downtown experience, with subsequent benches to be rolled out at various locations over time.
