According to a press release from the Maryland Department of Education, Nicole Murray-Lewis, an educator with nearly three decades of experience, has been elected as the teacher member to the State Board of Education. Murray-Lewis, who currently teaches social studies at James H. Blake High School in Montgomery County Public Schools, secured the position after receiving the highest number of votes in a recent election.

The election, which ran from November 3 to November 17, saw participation from eligible voters who held an active Maryland educator certificate or license as of October 10, 2025. A total of 3,624 votes were cast in the election to fill the vacant teacher member seat. Murray-Lewis garnered 39.9 percent of these votes. Her extensive career in education includes 24 years at Gaithersburg High School and four years with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. She also achieved National Board Certification in 2008. The results of the election are available online.
Murray-Lewis’s appointment is now slated for submission to Governor Moore and requires confirmation by the State Senate. This appointment could influence educational policies and decisions impacting teachers and students across Maryland.
