Thomas Balch Library in Leesburg, Virginia, is set to host a virtual presentation designed to help genealogy enthusiasts move beyond basic online tools. The workshop, titled “Moving Beyond Tree Hints: Using the Ancestry & FamilySearch Catalogs,” will be led by professional genealogist Joseph Roby and is scheduled for Thursday, October 2, at 7 p.m. The event aims to equip participants with the skills to more effectively navigate and utilize the extensive record catalogs available on popular genealogy websites like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org, which can often be overlooked when relying solely on automated “tree hints.”

The presentation is geared towards both beginner and intermediate genealogy researchers. Roby, who has extensive ties to Loudoun County, Virginia, will guide attendees through strategies for using the digital catalogs as a gateway to millions of records. By mastering these tools, participants can expect to locate historical documents more easily and prepare their research for utilization at libraries, archives, and other repositories. Even experienced researchers may find valuable new techniques or insights from the session.
Joseph Roby brings a wealth of experience to the presentation. He is a professional genealogist and an active member of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), having previously served in leadership roles within its Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Roby also has a background on the board of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. His current affiliations include the Black History Committee of the Friends of the Thomas Balch Library and the Howe House Historians in Montclair, New Jersey. Roby’s research expertise includes a specialization in African American and slavery-era records, with a particular focus on historical enslaved populations in Virginia. His personal research currently examines the individuals his ancestors enslaved on their Fauquier County farm.
