The North Atlantic Council has issued a strong condemnation of recent airspace violations by Russia, including a significant incursion into Estonian airspace on September 19. The council convened at the request of Estonia, invoking Article 4 of the Washington Treaty to discuss the incident and express unified concern. During the meeting, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe provided a briefing detailing how three armed Russian MiG-31 aircraft entered Estonian airspace for an extended period of over ten minutes. NATO forces responded swiftly by scrambling aircraft to intercept and escort the Russian planes out of Estonian territory.

This latest breach is being viewed as part of a larger pattern of what NATO describes as increasingly irresponsible behavior from Russia. This marks the second occasion within a two-week period that the North Atlantic Council has met under Article 4. Previously, on September 10, consultations were held in response to a large-scale violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones. Several other NATO member nations, including Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Romania, have also recently reported airspace incursions by Russia. The Council has expressed its full solidarity with all member states affected by these breaches.

Russia is being held fully accountable for these actions, which are characterized as escalatory and pose a significant risk of miscalculation and danger to life. NATO is calling for an immediate cessation of such activities. In response to Russia’s actions, NATO’s posture along its entire Eastern flank has been strengthened. On September 12, NATO launched “Eastern Sentry” to enhance its presence and readiness. This initiative includes reinforcing capabilities and bolstering deterrence and defense measures, with a particular emphasis on effective air defense systems.

NATO leaders have made it clear that Russia should not doubt the alliance’s resolve. NATO and its allies are committed to using all necessary military and non-military tools, in accordance with international law, to ensure self-defense and deter threats from any direction. The alliance reserves the right to respond in a manner, at a time, and in a domain of its own choosing. The commitment to Article 5, the collective defense clause, remains unwavering. Furthermore, NATO allies stated that these and other irresponsible acts by Russia will not deter their ongoing support for Ukraine. The security of Ukraine is considered integral to the security of NATO members, and the alliance reaffirms Ukraine’s right to self-defense against Russia’s ongoing aggression.
