According to a safety recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling 36 of its 2026 Granite (GR) model trucks due to a brake system noncompliance that could pose a serious safety hazard. These vehicles, produced between February and April 2025, were found to have a combination of brake drum and steer axle components that fail to meet federal standards, specifically FMVSS 121 regarding air brake systems.

The manufacturer determined that the affected brake configurations could result in diminished braking performance, increasing the risk of a crash. There are no dashboard warnings or indicators that would alert drivers to the issue, making the defect particularly concerning for operators. Fortunately, there have been no reported accidents, injuries, or warranty claims associated with the flaw to date.

Mack Trucks traced the issue back to a lack of validation testing on all vehicle variations before production began. The problem was identified in July 2025 during internal testing, and the company acted quickly to initiate a recall. The defect was confirmed by the Product Safety Committee on July 23, and a formal recall notice was submitted to NHTSA on July 29 under recall number 25V495.

As part of the remedy, Mack will replace the steer axle brake drums with new components (part number 24882190) that comply with FMVSS 121 requirements. The recall process will begin with dealer notifications starting August 1, 2025, and owners will be notified by September 19, 2025. Consumers are advised not to drive the affected trucks and to park them outside until the repair is completed.

Residents and fleet operators should be aware that all 36 trucks are considered to have the defect, with no exceptions noted. Mack Trucks will cover the cost of the replacement through its existing reimbursement plan. The company has already implemented compliant disc brakes in vehicles still under its control as of late May 2025.
