A recall issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on July 24 affects approximately 634,000 Frigidaire-brand minifridges sold nationwide. The appliances, manufactured by ShangYu North Electron Manufacture Co. Ltd. and imported by Curtis International Ltd., are being pulled from the market due to serious fire and burn hazards. The internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite the surrounding plastic housing, prompting concerns over safety for consumers across the country.

The recalled minifridges include four models: EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149, and EFMIS175. The affected units were sold in various colors and sizes (6- and 9-can versions) between January 2020 and December 2023 at major retailers like Walmart and online platforms including Amazon. According to the recall notice, at least 26 incidents of overheating, smoking, sparking, or fire have been reported. In addition to property damage exceeding $700,000, two individuals suffered smoke inhalation injuries.

Consumers in possession of these models are urged to stop using them immediately. Affected units can be identified by their model and serial numbers located on the back of the unit. Notably, the EFMIS129-B and EFMIS129-C versions are not included in the recall. Refunds can be requested at www.recallrtr.com/minifridge, and consumers must unplug the units, cut the power cord, label the appliance as “Recall” with permanent marker, and dispose of them following local and state guidelines.
