New York City has seen a dramatic increase in immigration enforcement requests this year, with more than 6,000 detainers issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in just six months. According to a press release from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), this figure marks a more than 400% rise in ICE detainers compared to the total issued during the entire Biden administration. The shift comes under President Donald Trump and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who have emphasized a tougher approach to immigration, especially in sanctuary jurisdictions.

The spike in detainers reflects a strategic push by federal authorities to apprehend and remove noncitizens with criminal records, especially in cities like New York that limit cooperation with immigration enforcement. While ICE has submitted 6,025 detainer requests in the city since January 20, 2025, officials note that local authorities have complied with very few. Sanctuary policies in New York restrict local law enforcement from honoring these federal requests, even when individuals are accused or convicted of violent crimes.
This enforcement surge comes as DHS reports an 830% increase in assaults on ICE officers since the start of the current administration. The agency attributes the rise in violence to what it describes as hostile rhetoric and policies from sanctuary city officials. Despite the lack of cooperation from local governments, DHS says it will continue placing detainers and removing individuals who pose a threat to public safety.
