Consumers are being urged by federal health officials to avoid inhaling nitrous oxide canisters, commonly sold for culinary use, due to growing concerns over severe health consequences, including neurological damage and fatalities. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an updated safety advisory warning that recreational misuse of these products, often sold under popular brand names, is leading to a rising number of serious medical incidents.

The advisory emphasizes that nitrous oxide, which is legally sold in canisters, tanks, and chargers for food processing—particularly whipped cream dispensers—has increasingly been misused for its euphoric effects. Brands identified in the warning include Galaxy Gas, Whip-it!, Cosmic Gas, and more recent additions such as ExoticWhip, FastGas, and NITROX. These products are widely available through online retailers like Amazon and eBay, as well as at local vape shops, smoke shops, and gas stations. Misuse through inhalation, often referred to as “whippits” or “laughing gas,” can result in a range of symptoms from dizziness and frostbite to irreversible neurological damage and even death.

Health complications tied to nitrous oxide misuse include vitamin B12 deficiency, limb weakness, psychiatric disorders, and loss of motor control. Regular or high-dose inhalation can result in prolonged effects such as paralysis or brain and spinal cord damage. Authorities have specifically warned that even flavored versions of these products—intended to attract younger users—pose the same life-threatening risks. The FDA continues to receive and monitor reports of adverse events related to misuse and is prepared to take further regulatory actions to protect public health.
Consumers are advised not to inhale these products under any circumstances and should consult a healthcare provider if they have used them and are experiencing concerning symptoms. Retailers and online platforms may continue selling these products for culinary purposes, but misuse remains a growing public health issue.
