The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers to immediately stop using Chepei 49cc Kids Gas Mini ATVs after identifying multiple safety violations that pose a risk of serious injury or death. The ATVs, manufactured by Chinese company Mlegaomoto and sold online at Walmart.com from March 2024 to January 2025, have been found lacking crucial safety components and fail to meet mandatory federal regulations for youth all-terrain vehicles.

The Chepei youth ATVs are missing essential visibility features including a tail lamp, stop lamp, and required safety reflectors, significantly increasing the risk of collisions. The vehicles also feature non-compliant mechanical suspension systems and handlebars, both of which could result in deadly crash or laceration hazards if impacted. Additional violations include missing safety labeling required for ATVs intended for children six years and older. These regulatory failures collectively heighten the dangers associated with operating the vehicle.

Federal law mandates that all ATV manufacturers maintain a CPSC-approved action plan to promote ATV safety through rider training, proper labeling, and other precautions. Mlegaomoto has not submitted such a plan for the Chepei youth ATVs, further contravening U.S. regulations. Despite a Notice of Violation issued by CPSC to the seller, shenzhenshi jingsi maoyiyouxiangongsi, the company has not agreed to initiate a recall or provide a remedy.

Priced at approximately $410 and available in green, red, blue, and yellow, the ATVs were imported from China and marketed exclusively through Walmart’s online platform. With ATVs annually contributing to over 850 deaths and an estimated 102,000 injuries, according to the CPSC’s 2024 report on Off-Highway Vehicles, the agency is advising consumers to cease using these products immediately and dispose of them according to local regulations. Consumers are also encouraged to report any related injuries or defects at www.SaferProducts.gov.
