Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reaffirmed her Department’s stance, stating that Harvard has much work to do before regaining the trust of the American taxpayer.

Secretary Noem’s announcement followed a recent communication from Harvard officials signaling an intent to comply with the Department’s Student Exchange Visa Program (SEVP) regulations. Despite this, Noem emphasized that Harvard’s previous noncompliance and other actions demonstrate a disregard for American oversight and public funds. The Department accused Harvard of fostering an environment that allowed antisemitic and anti-American violence and criticized its reported collaborations with CCP officials, which were viewed as detrimental to U.S. national security interests.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Harvard’s recent commitments are not sufficient to reverse the concerns raised. Noem reiterated that Harvard’s benefits from U.S. taxpayers are contingent upon substantial and verified changes. The Department plans to continue working with Harvard in pursuit of full compliance while maintaining strict scrutiny over the university’s practices.
