FDA Issues Nationwide Alert Over Contaminated Products from East Africa Boutique

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent public health alert warning consumers, retailers, and distributors to avoid consuming, selling, or serving any food products distributed by Pan-African Food Distributors Inc., operating under the name East Africa Boutique LLC. The advisory follows the discovery of significant health violations at the company’s Louisville, Kentucky, distribution facility, including evidence of an active rodent infestation and unsanitary storage conditions. The Kentucky Department for Public Health has mandated an operational shutdown of the business and initiated a blanket quarantine of all distributed products.

The affected products include a wide range of ready-to-eat and shelf-stable items, such as infant nutritional cereals, maize flour, cassava flour, peanut flour, and other baking ingredients. Some of these items may not have clear labeling identifying their origin from East Africa Boutique, which could make them difficult for consumers to recognize. Health risks from consumption include potential exposure to pathogens associated with filth, such as salmonella, E. coli, hantavirus, and rat-bite fever. The FDA advises anyone experiencing symptoms potentially linked to these products to consult their healthcare provider immediately.

Consumers are being urged to thoroughly inspect their homes for any items listed in the alert and dispose of them, regardless of whether the product packaging clearly names Pan-African Food Distributors. Retailers and distributors who purchased goods from the company are instructed not to sell or serve the products and must clean and sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with them. Distributors who further disseminated these goods are being directed to notify their downstream customers about the alert.

The FDA has confirmed that Pan-African Food Distributors has agreed to voluntarily recall all identified products. An ongoing investigation continues, and the agency plans to update the public as more details become available. Until then, the recommendation remains: discard any suspicious products, sanitize affected areas, and avoid feeding any such items to children or other vulnerable individuals.
