A Weirton, WV man has pleaded guilty to federal charges after admitting to distributing fentanyl as part of a drug trafficking operation that spanned from Chicago to communities in the Ohio Valley. The defendant, 46-year-old Daniel Paul Truax, is now facing a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.

Federal court documents indicate that Truax acted as a distributor within a larger network responsible for moving fentanyl into the region, including areas of West Virginia and neighboring states. The case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia.
The investigation into Truax’s activities was led by multiple law enforcement agencies working under a HIDTA-funded initiative. These included the Hancock-Brooke-Weirton Drug Task Force, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals Service, as well as local sheriff’s offices and police departments from both West Virginia and Ohio.

The prosecution is being carried out by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Clayton Reid and Carly Nogay. U.S. Magistrate Judge James P. Mazzone presided over the case. Sentencing will be determined by a federal judge following consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutory factors.
