A Baltimore man has been sentenced to 48 years in prison for his role in a deadly retaliatory attack that led to the death of his co-conspirator. Jimmy Murphy, 30, was convicted in March 2023 of conspiring to commit first-degree murder, attempted murder, second-degree arson, and altering physical evidence. The sentencing, delayed due to post-trial motions, was handed down by Judge John Addison Howard on March 13, 2025, in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City.

The case stemmed from a shooting on January 20, 2020, when Murphy and Cornelius Bruce sought revenge against Christopher Brown for the murder of Bruce’s brother, Cordelle Bruce, six days earlier. The pair drove to the 1000 block of Reverdy Road, where they opened fire on Brown. During the attack, a bullet intended for Brown struck and killed Cornelius Bruce. In an effort to cover up the crime, Murphy transported Bruce’s body in a rented black Ford F-150 to an abandoned field on Saint Lo Drive, where he set the truck on fire.

Firefighters discovered the burned vehicle and Bruce’s body inside after extinguishing the flames. Surveillance footage showed Murphy purchasing gasoline at a nearby station just before the fire was set. A medical examination confirmed Bruce died from a single gunshot wound, but it was unclear if he could have survived had Murphy sought medical help instead of destroying evidence.

At sentencing, prosecutors highlighted Murphy’s prior conviction for illegal possession of a handgun after the attempted murder of Brown but before his arrest. The State argued that Murphy’s actions, including his failure to seek aid for Bruce and his attempt to conceal the crime, exemplified a disregard for human life. Prosecutors emphasized that his sentence should serve as a deterrent to further violence in Baltimore City.

Christopher Brown and Darran Horton, the men responsible for Cordelle Bruce’s murder, were convicted in September 2022 and are currently serving their sentences. Attorney General Anthony G. Brown credited the Baltimore Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office for their roles in the investigation and prosecution of Murphy’s case.
