Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. has issued a recall for 13,769 electric vehicles, including the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 and the 2024-2025 Audi Q4 E-Tron SUV and Sportback models, due to a defect in the Onboard Charger with integrated DC/DC Converter (OCDC). The recall was prompted by potential safety risks associated with condensation forming within the OCDC, which can lead to electrical failures and an increased risk of crashes.

The issue, identified as recall 25V-125 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects 5,838 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles produced between January 30, 2024, and September 24, 2024, as well as 6,210 Audi Q4 E-Tron SUVs and 1,721 Audi Q4 E-Tron Sportbacks manufactured between November 30, 2023, and August 1, 2024. The problem arises from insufficient protective coating on the printed circuit board (PCB) within the OCDC, which may allow condensation to cause electromigration. This defect can prevent the 12V battery from charging, potentially resulting in vehicle non-start conditions, reduced driving functions, or complete loss of motive power.

Volkswagen and Audi began investigating the issue in September 2024 following initial field claims of charging problems, warning messages, and non-start conditions. An increase in reported incidents from October 2024 to January 2025 led to further analysis, confirming the impact of temperature and humidity on the OCDC’s performance. The company’s Product Safety Committees decided to proceed with the recall on February 21, 2025. The recall includes 127 reported claims for the Volkswagen ID.4 and 117 claims for the Audi Q4 models in the United States.
To remedy the issue, authorized dealers will replace the defective OCDC unit with an improved version at no cost to vehicle owners. Notifications to dealers are scheduled for March 4, 2025, with owners expected to be notified by April 29, 2025. Since the vehicles are within their new vehicle limited warranty period, no reimbursement plan will be offered.
