Kia America, Inc. has issued a recall for certain 2025 model year Kia EV9 vehicles due to a potential defect in the rear gear drive unit (GDU). The recall affects 342 vehicles manufactured between October 11, 2024, and December 19, 2024, at Kia’s Georgia facility. The issue stems from a welding error by the supplier, which could lead to damage to the motor shaft inside the rear GDU, potentially resulting in reduced acceleration and loss of motive power. Such a failure increases the risk of a crash.

The vehicles involved in the recall are all equipped with a dual-motor e-AWD (All Wheel Drive) system. The defect may manifest through abnormal driveline noise and the illumination of a “Check AWD/4WD” warning message. The rear GDU, which powers the rear axle of the vehicle, is supplied by Mobis N. America Electrified Powertrain, based in Richmond Hill, Georgia. The component at issue is identified under part number 44000-18MD2.
Kia will notify dealers on February 24, 2025, and vehicle owners on March 7, 2025, via first-class mail. Affected owners will be instructed to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer for a free replacement of the rear GDU. Kia will also reimburse repair expenses already incurred under its General Reimbursement Plan filed on May 1, 2024. Vehicles produced on or after December 20, 2024, are not affected, as they contain a properly welded motor shaft.
