A convicted murderer was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) on January 24 while agents intercepted a maritime smuggling operation off the coast of Southern California. The vessel, carrying six individuals attempting to enter the U.S. illegally, was stopped approximately six miles west of Solana Beach.

AMO Marine Interdiction Agents boarded the 20-foot vessel and determined that all six occupants were Mexican nationals. The vessel was seized, and the individuals were taken into custody for processing at the Chula Vista Border Patrol Station. During the investigation, one of the detainees was identified as Alejandro Arellano-Mejia, a previously deported felon who had served a 15-year sentence for murder.
Arellano-Mejia now faces charges under 18 USC 1326, a felony offense for reentry after formal removal. The case underscores CBP’s ongoing efforts to patrol U.S. waters and prevent individuals with serious criminal histories from entering the country.
